must-see attractions around Alsace holiday cottages

Alsace: the must-see attractions

One week is definitely not enough to visit our beautiful region, but if you are coming to Alsace for the first time, here is a suggested itinerary so you don't miss any of the must-see attractions and will want to come back again very soon!

All our suggestions are located less than 1.5 hours’ drive from La Longère des Capucines holiday cottage. Feel free to adapt the programme according to the weather and your preferences!

Day 1: arrival in Bergholtz

If you've just arrived at the cottage and have some time to spare, don't hesitate to go for a walk to Guebwiller, A jewel of art and history, it boasts a fascinating heritage. Concerts are often held on Saturday evenings at the Dominicans of Upper Alsace., view the programme !

A short visit to a wine cellar can also kick off your stay. I recommend visiting Albert Siegler in Orschwihr.

You can also choose to simply enjoy the garden or patio, or relax by the fire depending on the season!

Day 2: Quaint villages, half-timbered houses and the Alsace Wine Route

La Longere des Capucines holiday cottages, Bergholtz, Alsace, tourism2 (1)A day spent strolling contemplatively and culturally through the villages that have made the region famous for their beauty, their flowers, their half-timbered houses and their architectural heritage.

Today, leave your high heels at home, because you'll often be trudging along cobbled streets!

A first stop at Eguisheim One of the most beautiful villages in France, it is a true medieval gem, built concentrically around its castle.

Continue on your way to Kaysersberg, Voted France's favourite village in 2017, this small medieval-style town is dominated by a castle that can be reached on foot in just a few minutes. From the top, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards.

Many restaurants and terraces offer typical Alsatian dishes, but you can also leave this tourist spot and find more peace and quiet in the surrounding villages, such as Sigolsheim or Kientzheim.

Spend your afternoon discovering Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé, they too are full of narrow streets and houses, each one more beautiful than the last.

Throughout the day, feel free to pop into the wine producers' premises and sample some of our finest grape varieties!

Variant : Don't want to take your car but still want to enjoy the Alsace Wine Route? Hop aboard the Kutzig An original bus that stops at the wine-growing towns mentioned above!

Day 3: Strasbourg, capital of Alsace and Europe

La Longere des Capucines holiday cottages, Bergholtz, Alsace, tourism4 (1)It is impossible to visit Alsace without passing through Strasbourg

The Cathedral dominates the city, it is an almost obligatory stop, just like the Petite Venise district, the Vauban Dam, the Covered Bridges... Embark on a stroll along the water with Batorama, and discover the city from a different perspective!

With the tram, you can travel to the Orangery Park and the European institutions district.

Our advice:

For peace of mind, it is best to leave your car at Colmar station and to travel to Strasbourg by train !

You can also take your car and stop at the Illkirch Baggersee South Tram Relay, Upon arrival, you will be given a return tram ticket valid for all passengers in the vehicle.

A good idea for this day is to hire a bicycle (an old man), the cycle paths are well maintained and you will experience this day like a true Strasbourg resident!

Day 4: Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle and Colmar

La Longere des Capucines holiday cottages, Bergholtz, Alsace, tourism5 (1)Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle dominates the Alsace plain and from up there you have a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. The visit is free, but you can also take part in guided tours every day to fully enjoy this beautifully restored gem.

Colmar is a beautiful little town that can easily be visited in half a day. Feel free to lose yourself in the narrow streets or take part in one of the guided tours organised throughout the year by the Tourist Office.

Don't miss out on Little Venice, And why not take a trip in a flat-bottomed boat if the weather permits?

Our advice:

Start your day with a visit to the castle and end it in Colmar to enjoy the illuminations on display all year round in the Petite Venise district.

Remember to bring a light jacket when visiting the castle, as it can sometimes be a bit chilly in these old ruins!

Day 5: The Alsace Ecomuseum

La Longere des Capucines holiday cottages, Bergholtz, Alsace, tourism15 (1)Immerse yourself in Alsatian traditions in this reconstructed Alsatian village. Stroll through the narrow streets, observe and chat with the artisans who bring forgotten crafts back to life all year round.

La Longere des Capucines holiday cottages, Bergholtz, Alsace, tourism18 (1)This is another side of the region, with no half-timbered houses or geraniums here, but unspoilt wilderness and breathtaking landscapes...

It is also pleasant to visit Markstein for sunrise and enjoy the friendly chamois who let you approach them without any worries, a wonderful experience to enjoy.

If you're not too keen on hiking, then feel free to explore the Route des Crêtes by car, It's really worth it, and you'll be amazed!

For lunch, you have a wide choice farm inns In the hills, remember to book in advance, especially during peak season!
